Kerala Houseboats

In the ancient times, the Kerala Houseboat s (Rice Boats) or Kettuvalloms were country boats used primarily for transportation of goods from interior parts of Kerala to the towns like Allepey, Kochi, Kollam and Kottayam. This transportation scenario got a drastic change with the onset of roads, bridges and motorized ferry service. The lost glory of this Kettuvalloms is once again regained with the advent of the modified and redesigned luxurious version of the old Kettuvalloms.

The Making

The size of the Kerala Houseboats varies, for one bedroom houseboat the size is about 95 feet in length and a width of around 13 feet, big houseboats size is of 107 feet long and 19 feet wide. Moreover, the materials used are from nature and is eco friendly like bamboo poles, coconut fiber ropes, bamboo mats, coir carpets etc. Wood primarily used is "Anjali".

Comforts inside the Houseboat

House boats are available in single bedroom, double bedroom and five bedroom capacities. Apart from that these houseboats consists of sundeck, private balcony with comfortable chairs, kitchen, separate rest room and toilet. Single bedroom Houseboat is for two peoples, two bedroom houseboat for four people, three bedroom houseboat for six people and five bedroom houseboat for 10 people.

The Crew

These houseboats mainly consist of three member crew - a chef, driver and cabin assistant.


The cuisine of these houseboats consists of Kerala flavor food consisting of local specialties made from fresh fish and prawns caught from the backwaters.

A journey through these backwaters would be visual treat for your eyes and would help you to understand Kerala Life to a larger extent. On your journey through the backwaters you would come across Chinese fishing nets, water lilies, lush paddy fields, rustic homes, temples, mosques, churches, coconut groves and coir villages. The popular backwater destinations are Allepey, Kumarakom, Kollam, Kochi etc.
