Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

The bird sanctuary is situated on the banks of river Vembanad and is an ultimate place for backwater cruise. This 14 acre bird sanctuary is the paradise of ornithologist and the bird lovers. Siberian Stork, Teal, Egret Darter and Heron are some of the migratory birds found over there. Visitors are allowed from 10:00 am to 6: 00 pm. And the best time to watch birds are between the months of June and August.

Vembanad Lake

The network of rivers and canals of Kottayam fall into the Vembanad Lake which is a vibrant destination which provides boating, fishing and sight seeing experiences. As a tourist village Kumarakom offers house boat cruises and Kerala Holiday Packages.


Pathiramanal is a 10 acre island in the backwaters and is a home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world. The island can be reached only by a boat.


It is a stone lamp post built by the renowned freedom fighter Veluthampy Dalawa. The pecularity of the lamp is that it is built on the model of Kerala Architecture and the post has five lamps in it and is situated in Changanacherry market.


From this hill you could get a picturesque view of all low lying areas, a popular picnic spot in Kottayam.

St. Mary's Church Bharananganam

In this church the mortal remains of Blessed Alphonsa is entombed and attracts lot of pilgrims from near and far.


It is a beautiful valley in the district of Kottayam sprawling over thousands of acre. The meaning of the title is "valley where leaves don't fall" and the valley is adorned with four hills, each rising around to 3200 ft. and during the rainy season the picture completely changes and the valley transform to a scenic lake.


The highest point in Ilaveezhapoonchira, the valley of this Rocky Mountains reflects the morning sun like a mirror. Other added attractions are, there is a waterfall, and a natural fort set admist the steep rocks, which is located at the eastern side.

Mankallu Mudikal

It is three hills that lie close to each other and the aerial view would look like a traditional clay oven. The hilltop is covered with lush green grass.


The legend says that pandav brothers (according to the epic Mahabharata) stayed near this rock, which is 2000 ft above sea level and spread over 20 acres. There is an Ayyappa temple here and the temple has four rocks which support a flat piece of rock that forms the roof.


It is a Christian pilgrim center which can be reached by traveling 3 km from Vazhikkadavu, and it gets active during the holy week. Lots of devotees climb this hill as atonement to their sins, carrying small wooden cross. There is a monastery at the top of the hill and on the eastern side of the hill stands a temple dedicated to Lord Murugan.


A must see place, popular for its green hills filled with mist and the wonderful climate. There are lot of tea gardens and meadows and also it is the breeding center of the Kerala Livestock Board.

Pallom Backwaters

On the banks of Pallom Backwater you would find typical Kerala Villages and vivid green all around. A boat cruise in this Kodoorar to Kumarakom via Pallom Backwaters would give you enchanting nature experience. There is an old lighthouse in this area which was erected by Col. Munroe the then resident of Travancore.
